Monteverdi: Vespers of 1610 - The Thirteen

At the beginning of his career and in search of a prestigious appointment, Monteverdi began work on what would become one of the most performed works from the Baroque: his Vespers of 1610. Soon after its publication Monteverdi secured the prestigious appointment of Maestro di Capella at St. Mark's in Venice, where he would stay for the remainder of his musical career. Yet more important, the audacious musical ideas contained within its pages changed the course of musical history, ushering in a new musical period, the Baroque, and cementing Monteverdi's status as a musical pioneer. Replete with a dizzying array of textures and sonorities, opulent choruses, moving arias and duets, the Vespers of 1610 has become a towering achievement of the Baroque.
